The Dow Chemical Company, in regard to this award, is lauded for its innovation in the chemical industry and the impacts the commercialization of their technology has had on society at large.

Among its many advancements, the company is recognized for its inventions involving polyethylene and polypropylene—two of the most common types of plastic.

The Dow Chemical Company is responsible, for example, for creating polypropylene foam, a plastic foam used in automotive safety features because of its superior energy absorption, and for developing SiLK dielectric rein, which was commercialized for the fabrication of high-performance integrated circuits.
